COMPUTERS FOR PUPILS

Pupils from a Leeds school have joined the information age thanks to a scheme providing free computer and internet access in their homes.

Twenty young people from Priesthorpe Specialist Sports College in Farsley have received a brand new laptop, coupled with safe and secure internet access, which will open up the world of digital learning in their homes.

Education Leeds has been awarded a £1.8million government grant to distribute around 2,500 laptops to 11 to 16-year-olds in Leeds whose families wouldn't normally have access to a computer.

Councillor Stewart Golton, executive board member for children's services, said: "This scheme gives these young people a vital resource which could make a real difference and help them achieve their potential.

"It is a valuable part of our programme to narrow the gap in achievement across the city and secure a brighter future for all our children and families."

PROMOTING A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE

An annual campaign, which has seen nearly 100,000 children and young people across Leeds take steps to a healthier lifestyle, is aiming to do the same for their safety.

For the last two years, 'Be Healthy!' has invited young people to create and take an individual class or school challenge to increase healthy eating, physical activity and emotional well-being.

This year, the campaign becomes 'Be Healthy, Stay Safe', encouraging challenges exploring issues which make young people and their families safer – from weapons or drugs awareness to fire, road and internet safety.

Stewart Golton said: "The new Stay Safe challenges can help to create better understanding of ways young people can protect themselves from the risks and pressures they face today.

"This year we want even more young people - and their families - to get involved and challenge themselves to lead healthier, safer lives."

MYSTERY UNVEILED

York's famous Mystery Plays are receiving a 21st century update courtesy of the city's young people in a ground-breaking project led by City of York Council.

The York Youth Mysteries will introduce a whole new generation to the plays, which date back to medieval times.

Months of work by young people aged 16 to 25 years will culminate in a day of spectacular free performances in and around York city centre on Saturday 21 June. It will see more than 300 people take to the streets to present their own unique take on the internationally acclaimed plays, which cover Christian history from the creation to the last judgement.

Gill Cooper, the council's head of arts and culture, said: "We know that other cities perform Mystery Plays, but this project is unique to York, which is why we're so proud of the work that the team of young people are doing."
